Persistent identifiers (PIDs) are of central importance to FAIR research data management. However, different research disciplines and different resources result in diverse requirements. Also, the 27 NFDI consortia have different levels of maturity in PID implementation. PID4NFDI will design a work programme to build an NFDI foundation service on established PID infrastructures.

Project Goals

PID4NFDI will follow a clear strategy of promoting PID adoption based on existing PID infrastructures and service providers, and will only develop and operate NFDI-specific services when necessary. The goal is to introduce a portfolio of services that covers the various use cases and requirements of the NFDI consortia.

During the initial phase, use-case analyses, requirements engineering, and concept development established the foundation for the current integration phase. During integration, the PID4NFDI Coordination Hub is being expanded into a central contact point for all types of questions and needs related to PIDs. NFDI consortia and beyond are supported in integrating PIDs into their systems through central consultation offers, the collection of PID use cases, best practices, information on different PID types and providers, as well as the provision of PID-related services.

GWDG’s Role in the project

  • Provision of PID-related services for the NFDI via the PID4NFDI Coordination Hub
    • Data Type Registry for registering metadata types and schemas for PIDs
    • B2Inst for registering instrument identifiers
    • Prefix registration for NFDI use cases
    • PID Metaresolver for resolving different PID types
    • CAT Tool for policy compliance testing
  • Collaboration with NFDI use-case partners
  • Provision of training materials and best practices for PID integration
