IAM4NFDI is designed as a central basic service within the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) to provide researchers with easy and secure access to services across institutional boundaries. By using existing identity federations, community access management systems (AAIs), and standards such as eduGAIN and the AARC Blueprint Architecture, IAM4NFDI integrates various technical components into a reliable and scalable infrastructure. The goal is to provide sustainable support for scientific processes through role-based attribute management, interoperable systems, and a federated system architecture. The service promotes national and international research through an integrated, distributed IAM infrastructure.
The project aims to develop an infrastructure that facilitates authentication and authorization across institutional and consortium boundaries and is based on existing federated identity networks. Key components include federated authentication using established protocols such as SAML and OIDC, standardized role and attribute management, and integration with consortium systems. IAM4NFDI aims to create a trusted infrastructure that facilitates access to NFDI services and ensures the interoperability of the research data landscape.
The GWDG plays a central role in the IAM4NFDI by providing technical expertise and support for key projects such as PID4NFDI and Jupyter4NFDI within the NFDI. The GWDG contributes to the development and implementation of solutions that strengthen the IAM infrastructure and support scientific work processes. Together with other institutions, it coordinates and operates the core infrastructure and enables the service for the NFDI community. The IAM Incubator, as a central component of the project, tests and integrates new ideas and technologies into the IAM systems.
